While getting lunch on Saturday, I spotted Robert Duncan McNeill in line ahead of me. I couldn't quite place which Star Trek he was on, but it came to me later: Star Trek Voyager. That's the one with Captain Janeway as the captain of a Federation ship that follows some bad guys into a worm hole, ending up across the far side of the galaxy, where they have to join forces on the same ship to try and get home. I guess they did! Boom! Zing! There it is! You're welcome.

For those of you who are fans of "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia", you might think it cool that Mary Elizabeth Ellis (the waitress -- and real-life wife of Charlie Day from the show) came and watched our sketch comedy show!
On opening night, Mary Elizabeth came to watch the show because her friend (and co-star) Artemis Pebdani will be hosting our show in April. I got to have a really fun conversation with her before the show started, so I was pretty stoked going in. Ended up being a very decent show, and I had a good night acting-wise.

Was on a break from work the other day, so I went across the street to the CVS pharmacy to get a Monster energy drink. While I was standing in line, I noticed Ethan Embry in line 2 people ahead of me. He looked like he had just finished exercising at 24 Hour Fitness (which is next door). I didn't say anything.

Ethan has starred in a bunch of movies... Empire Records, That Thing You Do!, Vegas Vacation (as Rusty Griswold), Can't Hardly Wait, Sweet Home Alabama, and mostly recently in Eagle Eye.

NEW Personal Update

Hello all!

Well, I'm back in Los Angeles now. I didn't intend to come back until next week, but we had a pretty important writer's meeting and Saturday night rehearsal for my sketch show, "Fries on the Side', that I didn't think I could miss. So I'm back in LA through the weekend of the 25th. Then I'll be returning to Portland for about a month. Assuming all goes smoothly, I'll be back the end of May for good.

I'm working for my brother's brother-in-law now, selling web design and hosting, and I'm pretty much loving it. I can do it from home, with some flexibility, which works very well for me. Once I return in May, I'll be able to submit myself for commercials and the like, and actually go on auditions when I'm called in for them -- which is something I've rarely been able to do over the last 5.5 years.

Glad to be back, even if it's only for a few weeks.

Personal Update

Hello all!
Well, you may have noticed that most of my recent posts have not had much to do with celebrities or life in Los Angeles. Instead, I've shared a few internet gems I've found (like the Monty Python lego thing), commented on some films and highlighted some projects created by friends of mine.
That is because I've gone on a "working vacation" up to Portland, Oregon! So for those of you in the greater Portland area, feel free to give me a ring or something. For those of you in Los Angeles, I will be back down around April 20th.
Over the next few months, I will be ping-ponging back and forth between the two cities, just to keep everyone guessing :)
So -- I'll keep everyone updated on my doings, my whereabouts and all the usual stuff. Here's a bit of a teaser about what I'm working on in the next few months:
I'm directing three Christian music videos (which I'll post here), shooting another segment of my sketch comedy pilot, and continuing the online "Dudes!" digital shorts. Not to mention that "Fries on the Side" is returning for it's sixth season! Whew, I'm already exhausted :)

But more importantly -- Downey Jr. plays a pompous actor who, rather than cast a black man to play the role, takes it upon himself.
I just heard about this film and saw this picture, and just about died laughing. Had to share it.

I was performing at UCB (Upright Citizen's Brigade) on Franklin Ave. here in Hollywood on Saturday night (February 16), and we were waiting outside the theatre for the previous show to let out.
If you don't know the area, it's heavily residential, but this particular part of Franklin has a block of really interesting restaurants, bookstores, and the UCB Theatre.
Anyway, at around 11:45pm, Matt Lawrence (brother of Joey Lawrence) walked by the crowd. I actually didn't see him right away -- my buddy Kenny had to point him out.
Matt has been in a lot: "Gimme a Break!", Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Mrs. Doubtfire, "Blossom", "Brotherly Love", "Boy Meets World", The Hot Chick and "Boston Legal".

I've Been Sick...

...which is why I haven't posted in over a week; but I feel better now, and fully hyped to update you -- the reader/viewer -- on what's been going on.
Before I got sick, I helped out some folks who were organizing a special fundraiser for the Victims of the California Wildfires. It was a School of Rock concert at the world-famous Roxy, and featured their best students -- as well as two rock icons, Perry Ferrell of Jane's Addiction and Jon Anderson of Yes!
I was lucky enough to meet both of these guys, as well as MC the auction and raffle portions of the show. Here's some photos of them I got online, as well as a few of me with Wendy Winks, who I was helping out by being the voice on the mic.
I know I look serious, but I was probably being self-deprecating and concentrat-y.

Just for fun, I visited a website called "Selectsmart", which asks you a number of questions that reflect your opinions on major issues, and then ranks each presidential candidate in order, from the one who most parallels your views, to the least.
Once you indicate what your ideal candidate would feel about the issue, you also can rank the importance of the issue -- but only "low", "medium" (just leave the thing in the middle. If you move it, you can't move it back), and "high".
Once you see the list of candidates, you can click near their name and get a rundown of their actual voting history, any voting grades given by organizations (like the NRA or the Environmental Coalition), and get a clearer view of what they have said about the issues and what actions they have taken in the past.

Jaime King at "The Grove"

Honestly, I don't think anyone knows exactly what name she goes by now... Jaime, Jamie, James... they all seem to pop up in articles and movie credits. IMDB lists her as "Jaime", so that's what I've gone with here...
Anyway, I went and saw "Alien vs. Predator Requiem" the other day at The Grove here in Los Angeles (absolutely great theater) and I started off my theatre-going experience by using the restroom.
As I left the restroom and made my way over to the concession counter, I passed Jaime King as she headed towards the restrooms. She was wearing a winter knit hat. We looked right at each other and gave those little smiles -- you know the ones where your mouth is closed but you pull up the corners in a friendly manner? Yeah, we did that. And continued to walk on. (Sidenote: I showed my buddy Dan the smile I gave her. He said I looked like a dufus.)
It was cool to see her, but disappointing to find out that she apparently just got married in November to the director of her last project, "Fanboys". Oh well.
Jamie King has appeared in "Pearl Harbor", "Slackers", "Bulletproof Monk", "Sin City" and "Cheaper by the Dozen 2". She has five films slated to come out in the next year or so.

The Glamour of Striking

For those of you outside of Hollywood, the idea that well-paid film and television writers, a comparably glamorous job compared to most, would go on strike to seek more financial benefit from their work, may seem silly.

Silly or not, what I find fascinating is the kind of turn-out you see in the picket lines.

Only in LA, right? A group of hard-working men and woman, who put in long hours and churn out great products, picket in the chilly 63 degrees of LA (it's cloudy today). If this happened in your home town, it would seem blue-collar. But in Los Angeles, you can just drive by any of the picket lines that are outside of any of the dozen studios, and you will see a celebrity. I practically guarantee it. No wonder this strike receives so much attention -- the news cameras get a lot of face-time with big celebs who have turned out to support their writers. Commendable.

I'd love to see them at a coal mine, though. I bet those workers would get their demands, if George Clooney drew some attention out their way.

P.S. I saw David Boreanez picketing with the writers outside of the FOX lot today. You may know him from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Angel", "Bones" and soon to be Green Lantern in Justice League, due out in 2008.

So I had a good Wednesday night: headed up to Upright Citizen's Brigade and watched the improv troupe "Convoy" win their 23-straight cage match. Thomas Lennon, from "Reno 911", was in the audience. I guess he is there a lot. Thomas was also in Balls of Fury, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Memento and "The State".

While we were waiting in line outside, Mindy Kaling from "The Office", walked by in her Halloween costume. If I remember correctly, she was dressed as a basketball player. She was also in 40 Year Old Virgin where she played the ex-girlfriend they ran into at the speed dating event.

On a personal note, I had a very good show, I thought. I was extremely busy (performing in 7 sketches out a possible 13) but that didn't stop me from rockin' hard.

I saw "Kid" but no "Play"

Last Friday, Alex Enriquez (fellow staff writer at Fries On The Side) had his birthday party at Barney's Beanery here in Los Angeles, a famous local restaurant and bar. A lot of people were there, including my friend Amir Talai. A few of us were eating dinner, when Amir looked over my shoulder and said, "Chris! You're the man!" I turned around, and it was Chris Reid -- "Kid" from "Kid n' Play".
Kid was the member of the two-man group with the really tall fade. He's much older now, and doesn't wear his hair like that anymore. For those of you who don't know, they were a rap duo in the late 80's, and starred in many of the "House Party" movies. Here's a clip from the first one, which also had Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell in it. They ended up being the stars of "Martin".

Lunch of the Conchords

I had lunch today with my friend John Rogers at a place called "The Alcove". It's on Hillhurst, in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. Nice little uppity cafe with outdoor seating. I was having lunch with John because I'd recently set up a film shoot in his basement recording studio for my sketch comedy pilot, and I was up at his place taking photos of it to show Matt Fontana, my partner in the pilot.

John's a pretty spectacular musician who has an admiration for the sketch comedy I do, and somehow we always find parallels in music and sketch to talk about, so the conversations are always interesting.

I was talking to him about the HBO show "Flight of the Conchords", and how the format of the show is nearly the inverse of the format of my show. While I'm talking about "Flight", I look up at some people entering the cafe -- and it's Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement from "Flight of the Conchords"!

Bret looks at me, and I say, "Dude. I'm was literally just talking about you guys." He kind of smiled and entered the restaurant. I look back at John, and we're both kind of shocked. John says, "What are the odds of that?"

After they ordered, they took some outdoor seating just across the walkway from us, so we ended up having lunch about eight feet from the stars of my favorite show. Pretty cool.

For those of you who saw, or heard about, the extreme upset in college football on Saturday, this video is for you. One of the highest-ranked football teams in America (The University of Michigan -- ranked #5) lost to a crappy little team from Appalachian State -- a team that doesn't even play I-A football. They're from Boone, North Carolina, and they play I-AA football (like a junior college or small private school). Anyway, this is the promo video for their school... from 2004.

It's a long-form improvisational show, and the special guest this week is Maya Rudolph! You would know her from Saturday Night Live, if you've spent any time watching the show since the turn of the 21st century.

I'm looking forward to it.

Celebrity Sighting

I didn't mention this in the "Superbad" post, because it took me until now to figure out where I knew this guy from.

When I went to see "Superbad", this guy was in line to get tickets. I don't know what he was going to see, but I totally recognized him. In my head, I could envision him looking scary and threatening, with it raining -- but I couldn't figure out what movie he'd been in that fit that description. Then it came to me: he was on "Lost", the t.v. show!

His name is William Mapother, and he played Ethan Rom. If you remember, Ethan Rom was an infiltrator from the "others". When he was discovered, he kidnapped Claire and beat up Charlie. Later, Charlie shoots him dead.

While looking up his credits, I realized that I'd seen him before. He appears in "Without Limits", the Steve Prefontaine movie, as University of Oregon runner Bob Peters, whose "Bible-thumping innocence contrasts with the fast-paced lifestyle of his fellow runners". That was a movie I was an extra in!

So there you go. Celebrity sighting, yo.

"Superbad" Review

Yes, I missed the opening weekend. What can I say? I've got a lot of stuff going on. I am very busy making things happen. But I finally saw "Superbad" last night at The Grove in Los Angeles, and here's what I thought:

1) A ridiculous amount of swearing, crudity, offensive behavior, etc.
2) No nudity.
3) Ridiculously simple plot.
4) Completely hilarious and forever quotable.
5) Ultimately a very meaningful film about friendship.

Look -- I'm not one to shy away from a bit of verbal garbage. I mean, life itself if full of profanity and inappropriate conversations. So I wasn't going to let that get in my way of what is toted as one of the best movies of the year. Honestly, I wasn't disappointed. It was great.

Just looking at the cast, the average movie-goer isn't going to recognize anyone, except maybe Seth Rogan from "40 Year-Old Virgin" and "Knocked Up", or Jonah Hill from "Evan Almighty", "Knocked Up", "Accepted" or "Grandma's Boy". Those who recognize Jonah Hill probably don't know his name.

But as anyone should tell you, good acting and a great script (coupled with a really great sound track, amazing editing, etc.) are what make a film truly successful -- not "name" actors. And quite frankly, if Jonah Hill doesn't become one, there is no justice in the world.

He is surrounded by two great co-stars: Evan and Foggell, played by Michael Cera and new-comer Christopher Mintz-Plasse (who goes by McLovin in the film, or FAGGell as Jonah calls him). Bill Hader, of "Saturday Night Live" notoriety, plays a cop alongside Seth Rogan, and they almost need a sequel just about those guys.

So -- what do you want from a review, huh? You wanna know if you should see it. Fine. The answer is simply "yes". Should you pay full price for it? Yes. A large portion of pop culture is going to be based on references to this film in the next year, so if you don't want to seem like a moron, go see it.

UNLESS you don't like laughing or being awesome. Then don't.

How to come up with a Joke

As you well know, I'm doing stand-up at "Fries On The Side" this Saturday night. Plus, I'll be performing sketch comedy there.

In conclusion... heh... I want to make sure I have some new material to satiate my superfans who see every show I do. To that end, I was working on it last night. Here's what happened:

I was on Crackle.com watching other people's stand-up bits, and noting their topics. (This isn't stealing, cuz I don't use their jokes. But with everything you could possibly do a joke about, it helps to narrow it down). Here are the topics I found inspiring:

Bookstores
Orgasms
Pirates

I wrote those three words down, intending to write stuff about each one. Then I realized... there was ONE joke here, dealing with all three. I'm not telling you what the joke is, but it's frickin' hilarious.

So... come see my show and hear what I came up with. Hah! Marketing ploy!

P.S. This is just a picture of pirates and kids, which has nothing to do with the joke. In fact, even considering the possibility is disgusting. But also hilarious... hmm....

Matt Baetz on the Late Late Show

The Launch of the Jeff Huit Myspace Comedy Page!

I have finally joined the ranks of such comedians as Dane Cook and Jon Lovitz and launched my own Comedy Page on Myspace. I have only to add about a million friends, and then my domination will be complete :)

Currently, you can watch some of the best sketches that I've performed in, written, or both.

I'm expecting to have bits of my stand-up posted on the page within the week, so those of you in far-off places like New York or the San Fernando Valley can see just what it is I do. I should warn you though: when a person does stand-up comedy, he puts on a persona that most affectively delivers the material. Some of that material may be offensive to you, so perhaps you should just ignore my Comedy Page.

Jeff to Perform Stand-up AND Sketch Comedy!

Next week, August 25th, I will not only be performing in my sketch comedy show, "Fries On The Side", I will also be doing a stand-up set!

We have had ridiculously great shows this year. The quality of material and performers has skyrocketed over past seasons, and we are doing our best work ever. I'm extremely proud of what the audience experiences -- for only $6!!!

To be asked to do stand-up during the show is really cool. So -- if you've never seen my sketch show and never seen me do stand-up, this is a perfect chance to do both at once.

My "War" on Excess Packaging

I recently read an article about the amount of bottled water that Americans now consume, and how many bottles end up in landfills, and it really made me think about my own consumption. I don't know how many "packaged" drinks I consume on a daily basis, but I am aware that most of the containers I use for beverages and food end up in the garbage after only one use. And that has always rubbed me the wrong way.

In LA, the grocery stores always give you an option of "paper" or "plastic". I have no idea which is a better choice, but I usually go with paper, thinking, if nothing else, paper is "obviously" biodegradable. Sometimes, they go with plastic bags without even asking, and they are nearly done by the time I notice.

But it isn't that they use plastic. They also double-bag EVERYTHING. Does that seem crazy? I'm buying dozens of items, all packaged to be used in just a few days, bagging them in plastic that I just throw away... just how much packaging am I contributing to some desert hole?

Ironically, it is the environmentalists that shout the loudest about our careless consumerism, shouting about how we're treating Mother Earth. I say ironic, because I personally think Christians should be shouting the loudest about abusing the planet. It is a well-taught Biblical truth that man was put on Earth for a purpose, and with several responsibilities. One of those is the stewardship of nature: using it for our own purposes, sure -- but also caring for it like a prized garden. And yet when the Left draws our attention to overflowing landfills filled with stuff that shouldn't even be there if we just made a few changes, and to skies filled with smog, and to lakes and rivers that are polluted... why aren't we equally appalled?

What would Jesus do? There are some things we should all agree on. This should be a no-brainer.

Whatever. I'm ranting. Basically, I just wanted to say that I'm going to make a solid effort to reduce my garbage in as many ways as possible. First off, no more bottled water. I've got a Brita pitcher filter now, so I'll just use that. Second, using the recycling bins out back. I don't know why I haven't. Whatever.

I hugged the principal when he handed me the "fake diploma" just to get a laugh (and I did)... and "Doc Brown" from Back to the Future was there.

As you, my loyal reader, are well aware, my friend Matt and I have a sketch comedy show called "Showered & Ready". This last Saturday, we spent the day shooting another part of our sketch comedy pitch pilot. We shot the sketch "Floating People", which is a sketch about an actor, coming in to shoot one pivotal scene for a motion picture called "Floating People". During the sketch, some unfamiliar dialogue is said by the supporting cast -- dialogue that blatantly plugs consumer items like Bufferin, Honey-baked Ham, Peptol Bismal and Nicorette. Here they are! Proof that I am in Los Angeles, and that I do meet famous people. This last Saturday, Danny Woodburn hosted my sketch comedy show, "Fries On The Side". He was gracious enough to allow these photos to be taken.

Just so you know, he was absolutely cool to work with. Very nice guy, very funny. He did a great job, and seemed to really enjoy himself.

You would best know Danny from his role as Mickey, Kramer's friend, on "Seinfeld". But he's also been in: Employee of the Month, Death to Smoochy, The Flintstones in Viva Las Vegas, Jingle all the Way, "Monk", "Bones", "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody", "One Tree Hill", "Eight Simple Rules", "Charmed", "Angel", "CSI", "Becker", "Veronica's Closet"... the list goes on and on.

Just realized I had this picture of Amir Talai from the Memorial Day BBQ at Dorien Davies' house. Since I've never actually taken a picture with a recognizable actor, I figure that at least one TAKEN by me would be pretty close. Plus, that's my roommate Dan Yates next to Amir.

Jeff returns to "Punk House"

That's right: I'm standing-up in "Punk House" on August 8th at 9pm. It's probably the best stand-up show in LA, especially for the price: $5.

For $5, you get to see a half a dozen comedians with super-tight material. And the atmosphere is totally laid-back and fun.

It's held at The Westside Eclectic, which is at 1323-A Third Street Promenade (in the alley between third and fourth, north of Hooter's) in Santa Monica.

Here's the big deal: I will be filming my set, to use for a variety of reasons. The more people that show up, the bigger the response my material should get, which will sound great on tape.

So... if you love me, and you can be there, and you have $5... please come out!

Queen Latifah Buys Makeup

Yesterday, I was at Long's Drugs (on the corner of La Cienega and Beverly) to buy some coffee syrup (cuz I got a cold over the weekend), and who would you guess is in front of me in line? That's right -- Queen Latifah. She was buying $90 worth of makeup and talking on the phone to someone about the brand name of some type of liquor she wanted.

Everyone in line (and behind the counter) just looked at each other and raised our eyebrows and nodded, just to verify that we all realized it was Queen Latifah.

Fun Bobby from "Friends"

Forgot to mention that Fun Bobby from "Friends" was at Midsummer Night's Dream. He and his family was front and center on blankets with a picnic, and I was about 3 blankets to the left of them, one row back.

He actually looked back at me several times, probably because it was obvious on my face that I recognized him.

Busy Weekend!

On Friday, I once again did stand-up on the mainstage of the Comedy Store. For the first time ever, I was the opener! In the past, I'd gone up somewhere in the middle, which is considered the best time. Last month, though, I went up nearly at the end. I didn't like that much. I think the audience was tired (since the show is about 2 hours long).

The show started at 8:30pm. I was told I was opening the show at 8:21pm. So once the host had finished her six minutes, it had been only 15 minutes since I was told. And then I went on. I found out that I love opening a show. Not only was I fresher, for not having waited around for an hour or more, but the audience was ready and willing to laugh. I got huge responses, so it felt really good.

Plus, I had learned something from the last time I was there. Last time, I had started a lot "faster", jumping right into some crazy material. I felt like it was too much, and I think I didn't get the audience as much on my side, so the whole set didn't feel as strong. Coupled with going up extremely late, it just didn't feel like the best set. This time, I eased into it, and they were with me the whole time. It all just clicked perfectly. Cathy Lewis and Vargas Mason (the hosts of the show) and a half a dozen of the other comics made a point to tell me what a great set I did. And I really feel like it was true.

On Saturday night, I performed in "Fries On The Side"... and it wasn't a particularly great show, I don't think. Our host was great, though. Dan Mintz had them dying! But some of the sketches (and a lot of the performances) just didn't land. It made for a rough night.

On Sunday, I went and saw "A Midsummer's Night Dream" performed by the Independent Shakespeare Company in Barnsdall Park. One of my best friends, Sean Pritchett, played Robin Goodfellow (or "Puck"). It was surprisingly funny (perhaps because it's been 15 years since I read it -- and didn't remember that it was supposed to be). There were a few performances in it that I felt "lacked" a bit, but overall the actors -- especially Sean -- were genious. In fact, it was the most I'd seen of Sean in one of their productions, and he absolutely kicked butt. He was great.

Do to the comments on this post, I will now explain who Mark Mcgrath is: Mark is the lead singer of the band "Sugar Ray", and currently hosts "Extra". People Magazine named him "Sexiest Rocker" of 1998.... although I don't see it.

Star-studded Night at the Improv

Saturday night, my buddy Matt and I went to The Improv to see his buddy, Chris Titone, perform. Chris is Adam Sandler's brother-in-law, and a good friend of Julie, Matt's girlfriend. Chris put us on the list, so we got in free, which was cool.

The show is hosted by Phil Varone, drummer for Skid Row, turned stand-up comedian. Not only did Chris Titone perform, but so did Bobby Lee from "MadTV" and Mo Collins from "MadTV". Sitting right in front of us was Adam Sandler and Kevin James, from "King of Queens". At one point, Nick Swardson came on stage to introduce the next comedian.

As we were leaving, I told Mo Collins she did a great job.
